Aberystwyth County Council are committed to reducing both energy costs and their carbon footprint and recognised that by refurbishing their existing data centre both these objectives could be achieved.

The Data Centre in Aberaeron, was previously cooled using 4 standard DX split systems which provided nearly 50KW of cooling but cost many thousands of pounds to operate and maintain.

These units were replaced with 2 EcoCooling units which can provide up to 70kW of cooling from just 3kW of electrical power.  This immediately provided large cuts in energy costs and left the council with room for expansion if and when required.

The return on investment should be within 18 months and the cost savings are estimated to be £23000 per year with carbon savings of 120kg per year.

The council requested that the coolers have extra filtration as they were concerned about contamination due to the coolers being situated on a road. This was achieved by using wrap round filters which are attached to the outside of the units enabling the inner filter material layer to be changed simply, as and when required. This simple filtration system provides filtration to EU4 level.
