Data Centre Cooling with Noise Reduction

Reed Elsevier is a world leading provider of professional information solutions in the Science, Medical, Legal, Risk and Business sectors.

A new Data Centre has just been installed at their offices in Kiddlington, Oxford. The total IT load within the area is 45kW and the area is cooled using two EcoCooling CRECs (Computer Room Evaporative Coolers).

The CRECs are mounted in the internal quadrangle of the building, which is surrounded by windows that are often opened to cool the three storey office block.

Data Centre Cooling with Noise Reduction The close proximity to office areas meant the CRECs required modifying to reduce the ambient noise levels to a minimum. The resulting system has a combined noise level of only 54dB(A) thanks to noise reducing fans and anti vibration mount fittings. This meant there were no complaints from the surrounding office areas when the equipment was running.

Data Centre Cooling with Noise ReductionThe resulting EcoCooling system will save over £13,000.00 per annum in running costs and over 107 tonnes of carbon when compared to the alternative air conditioning solution.

Data centres require cooling 24/7, 365 days a year: In cold periods when the area still needs cooling the EcoCooling system provides an internal damper that opens and entrains internal warm air from the servers into the entering cold air stream. This patented attemperation loop means that differing quantities of hot air flowing out of the server room can be utilised to provide “free heating” of the external air ensuring that the temperature in the server room remains constant. On hot days the EcoCooler uses evaporative cooling to cool the fresh air down to the set point programmed into the unique automatic control system (usually between 19-22°C). This system maintains temperature control within the server room to within plus or minus 1°C.
