Talk Talk Data Centre Cooling

EcoCooling was approached by Talk Talk because of the unrivalled kWc/£ performance offered by their products. Facilities manager Mark Jacobs wanted to reduce the environmental impact of the company's data centers across the board as well as curbing energy costs. He needed a product that could achieve both these objectives as well as maintaining the critical functionality of the facility. Their test laboratory data centre facility at Irlam near Manchester was chosen for the first project since the existing cooling system was both under performing and consuming a lot of energy.

Talk Talk Data Centre Cooling from EcocoolingTwo EcoCooling Computer Room Evaporative Cooling (CREC) systems were installed on the roof of the building as part of a fresh air ventilation system to provide 100kW of cooling to the main server room. Each system has two coolers which bring air into the building and distribute it through vents directly into the centre of the server room which has no containment. Highly efficient Electrically Commutated (EC) fans are used for the supply and extract. The extract fans are sited on the external perimeter of the building to allow the hot air to be extracted. The existing DX system has been retained to provide back-up should this be required. The new system has increased the cooling capacity as well as reducing the energy consumption from ~16kVA to ~2kVA (~87% power reduction).

Mark Jacobs Energy & Facilities Manager said ..... "We are extremely happy with the performance of our EcoCoolers, the system consumes 87% less power than the previous DX system did and our data hall is now cooler than it ever was before. We were expecting to have to utilise the secondary system (DX) occasionally, but the EcoCooling system has performed very well and the secondary system has remained off."

The graph above shows the instantaneous use of electricity for the cooling system at Irlam showing clearly the reduction achieved when the CREC system was introduced.
